Vol. 237 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allocation of South Tipperary Houses.

79.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government if he will confirm in respect of Tipperary South Riding County Council that tenants of council houses are ordinarily appointed there by the county manager aided by the advice and recommendations of the medical officer of health on a priority scheme passed by the county council and sanctioned by him; and if he will state in regard to the last 100 tenants appointed (a) the number of cases where the appointment was in accordance with the advice of the medical officer of health, (b) the number of cases where the county manager departed from the priority basis as recommended by the medical officer of health and (c) the number of cases where the county council overruled by a majority vote the recommendations of the county manager or the medical officer of health.

The scheme of letting priorities adopted by the County Council of Tipperary South Riding under section 60 of the Housing Act, 1966, and approved by me on 9th August, 1968, provides that, for the purpose of determining the order of priority to be followed in the making of lettings, the housing authority shall obtain and have regard to a report from their county medical officer. The making of lettings under the scheme is an executive function, performable by the county manager. The detailed information requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department. I have asked the housing authority to supply this information and I will forward it to the Deputy when it is received.
