Vol. 238 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin County Road Improvement Grants.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make arrangements to have grants provided for County Dublin for county road improvement works similar to grants being given to Dublin Corporation and Dún Laoghaire Corporation for urban road improvement works.

The grants to be allocated to road authorities, including Dublin County Council, in respect of the financial year 1969/70 have not yet been determined. In determining these allocations all relevant factors will be taken into consideration.

Is that not purely an evasive answer? Is the Minister not aware that nearly all the roads in County Dublin at the present time are main roads? Having regard to the volume and weight of traffic on these roads, they are inadequate now and there is an enormous job to be done. County Dublin is mainly urban now. The ex-Minister for Local Government promised to reclassify the roads and failed to do so.

What about 1948 when you refused the money?

The Minister said he intended to provide Dublin County Council with grants. Would the Minister not provide them with grants similar to those given to the Dublin Corporation and Dún Laoghaire Borough?

At the expense of what? Which county does the Deputy propose we take the extra money from?

From the Road Fund. Did we not provide £10 million?

I am aware of the arrears of work in Dublin and the reason for it.

What is the reason for it?

A Coalition majority in Dublin County Council refused to accept the money.

This is the kind of talk we get from the Minister at all times. He has as many as anybody else on the Dublin County Council.

Would the Fianna Fáil Deputies in Donegal County Council get it if they applied for it?

(Interruptions.)

Would the Minister give a proper answer to the Question? This is just a foolish answer which has nothing to do with the problem. It is a silly, stupid answer.
