Vol. 238 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wholesale Tax on Pharmaceutical Products.

54.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the considerable hardship which will be inflicted by the five per cent increase in wholesale tax as applied to pharmaceutical products; and whether the Government will consider exempting certain priority products from the tax.

There is a general exemption from wholesale tax for medicines and it is interpreted liberally. In these circumstances I do not accept that the tax is causing hardship in this field or that there is need for exemption for particular pharmaceutical products.
