40.

asked the Minister for Education what is the sum paid per week for the upkeep and education of a boy in an industrial school.

The current weekly rate of capitation maintenance grant payable in respect of children committed to industrial schools is £4 2s 6d. In addition the Department pays the salaries of the teachers.

41.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in relation to industrial schools the salary of (a) the resident manager, (b) the sub-manager, (c) the bursar, (d) any other officials, domestic staff, chaplains, nuns in charge of infirmary, medical officer, etc. and (e) any teachers in these schools.

Apart from the teachers who are paid by the Department the remuneration of the staff is borne by the conductors of the schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in relation to industrial schools (a) if the boys are taught the subjects of an ordinary national school, (b) if the schools are subject to inspection by national school inspectors, (c) what other officials have the right to inspect them, (d) if the boys are taught trades, (e) at what age the boys are discharged and (f) if a boy is discharged to a trade and proved unsuitable, whether the school must bring that boy back for further training.

(a) Primary school pupils in industrial schools follow the ordinary national school curriculum;

(b) all eligible children in industrial schools attend national schools which are inspected by national school inspectors;

(c) industrial schools are subject to inspection by an inspector of reformatory and industrial schools and by a medical inspector;

(d) elementary instruction in trade skills is given to boys in industrial schools and in addition some attend technical schools;

(e) boys are normally discharged at or before sixteen years of age or at the expiration of the period of detention prescribed by the courts; and

(f) if a boy on discharge from an industrial school enters a trade and proves unsuitable the school is not obliged to recall him for further training.
