Vol. 238 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Site Costs.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the average cost of a site for a new house in the Dublin region is now £1,200 of the cost of the house; and that the average site cost in Northern Ireland on a new house is £553; and whether he can take any action in the matter of the heavy costs of housing sites.

Precise figures showing the average cost of a site for a new house in the Dublin area are not ascertainable and such figures as are quoted by various sources refer to a limited number or type of case. I am aware that the price of land for housing in the Dublin area ranges from about £100 for an undeveloped site to substantially more than £1,000 per site where the site is developed, depending, amongst other things, on the location and attractiveness of the site.

As to the action taken by the Government, I would refer the Deputy to what I said on Wednesday, 26th February on the motion sponsored by the Deputy and other Opposition Deputies welcoming my statements on the question of land prices for housing.

What the Parliamentary Secretary says there is untrue. Is he aware that the price of sites for houses in Dublin is in the region of £700 to £2,500? That is the price range in Dublin at the moment and the price mentioned by the Parliamentary Secretary is utterly unreal.

I said the price ranges to substantially more than £1,000.

He said from £100 to £1,000.

(Interruptions.)

It is bad enough for the Minister for Finance to try to protect him but now they are all trying to protect him.

What would you get for £100?

Order.

Question No. 31 postponed.
