Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Growth of Bracken.

16.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that thousands of acres of land in the west of Ireland are being rendered useless for agricultural purposes because of the uncontrolled growth of bracken; and if it is proposed to take any steps to remedy this situation.

The growth of bracken infests some land, in particular hill and mountain areas, in the west of Ireland as it does elsewhere. Its control must be regarded as a part of normal husbandry, advice on which is available in the ordinary way through the agricultural advisory services. Research has shown that where the elevation, slope and outcropping rock position permits, the most economic proposition is to control bracken by cutting or spraying. If operations such as rock or fence removal, levelling of grounds, etc., are involved, application may be made under the Land Project for grant aid towards the reclamation of the land.

You did away with the section where they could have got this done.

The Deputy is not coding us.

You know well you did.

When was it available? It is the bracken we are cutting; it is not preservation here.

You did away with section A which would have done it.
