Vol. 239 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Traffic Warden.

23.

asked the Minister for Justice why a member of the Garda Síochána is no longer on traffic duty outside Terenure College, Templeogue Road, Dublin, having regard to the fact that for very many years such a service was provided and that the considerable growth in the number of pupils at that college and in road traffic has increased the necessity for a garda to assist pupils in crossing that busy road; and if he will take steps to have a garda placed on duty there as heretofore, particularly until such time as a school traffic warden may be appointed.

The safe passage of children crossing roads on their way to and from school is accepted by the Dublin Corporation as primarily a matter for the local authority and they have made a number of appointments of wardens in the vicinity of schools.

The Commissioner has informed me that due to the very heavy demands on the services of gardaí in the Dublin Metropolitan Area, it is no longer possible to assign a garda to help out in duties of this kind at Templeogue Road.
