Vol. 239 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Rates.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the continued escalation of the rate demand, he will consider the feasibility of the payment of rates on a monthly basis where the payee requests this facility.

As already indicated by me, the Government have approved of my proposal for legislation which will confer an entitlement on certain classes of ratepayers to opt to pay their rates in instalments, spread over the whole or the greater part of the financial year in accordance with instalments schemes to be drawn up by the local authorities.

Could the Minister say whether or not the local authorities have this power to take rates by instalment already?

They have. This will confer entitlement on people to pay their rates by instalment.

According to what I hear you are not anxious to have any rates at all in Dublin city next year.
