Vol. 241 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution of Tolka River (Dublin).

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the city end of the Tolka River is now filled with refuse to such a degree that it is a health hazard to adjoining residents; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government what action it is proposed to take to clean the bed of the Tolka River between Drumcondra, Dublin, and the sea in order to remove the refuse which is at present polluting the river and causing a health hazard to local residents.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 33 together.

I have received no reports on the matter raised by the Deputies. Enforcement of the law in regard to the dumping of refuse is a matter for the sanitary authority.

Has the Minister's attention been drawn to a leading article in one of the evening papers about this matter and does he not consider that it calls for immediate and drastic action?

It is a matter for the sanitary authority and not for my Department.
