Vol. 241 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bay Pollution.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government what steps he proposes to take with regard to the pollution of Dublin Bay in view of the Minister for Health's statement that the pollution has increased this year and in view of the repercussions of this upon the amenities of Dublin Bay and the need to preserve the attractions of its beaches for Irish people and tourists alike.

As I stated in my reply to Questions Nos. 16 and 17 of the 8th instant, major drainage works in progress or in planning in the Dublin area will remedy to a considerable extent any existing pollution problems in Dublin Bay. As I also indicated these projects continue to be the subject of consultations between my Department and the sanitary authorities concerned and I am satisfied that everything is being done to bring them to construction stage as soon as possible.

Does the Minister not recall a previous occasion on which I asked a question about this ? I think he then agreed with my statement that the city manager had said that there would be no improvement in the pollution in Dublin Bay as a result of the proposed works? How does the Minister reconcile that with his statement today?

I am not aware that the city manager said that. I am aware that Deputy FitzGerald said it.

The Minister will recall that when I said this on the last day he did not dissent.

The Deputy says so much that I would not have time to dissent from everything that he says.

The Minister is aware that it is so?
