Vol. 241 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postmens' Working Week.

121.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what progress is being made towards giving postmen a five day working week.

A staff claim for a five-day week for postmen is under consideration by the Departmental Council under the agreed Scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration for the Civil Service. So far, a five-day week has been introduced for over 500 postmen and the possibility of granting it to the balance of 2,300 full-time postmen continues to be examined by the Departmental Council. It would be inappropriate for me to comment on the prospects of introducing it for these 2,300 while the matter is under consideration by the council.

Would the Minister say when consideration is likely to be completed?

I could not say that. This is something that goes on quite apart from me altogether.

Could the Minister expedite it in any way? The 2,300 postmen are anxious as well as other people?

The fact that so much progress has been made has been because I have been pushing for expedition.
