Vol. 241 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Work Funds.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in those areas where central allocations under rural improvement works are not taken up, such moneys will be made available to the county council for county road works.

I take it that the question relates to the local improvements scheme. I have no power to authorise the expenditure of moneys voted for that scheme on the improvement or maintenance of public roads.

The roads I had in mind were boreens taken over by local authorities for surface dressing. A small amount of money is allocated for surface dressing of these boreens by most county councils. In many cases money, allocated from central funds, is not taken up. Is the Minister in any position to allow county councils to utilise that money locally in areas where it is not taken up?

No, not where they have been taken over.
