Vol. 241 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Van Hire Regulations.

70.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will review the existing regulations governing the renting of motor vans for hire with particular reference to the fifteen miles restriction inside which such a vehicle is compelled to operate.

The Road Transport Act, 1956, provides that, with certain exceptions. when a hired vehicle is used for the carriage of merchandise, the hirer shall be deemed to be carrying on a merchandise road transport business requiring a merchandise licence. A merchandise licence is not required for operations within a 15-mile radius of the principal post offices in Dublin and Cork and within a 10-mile radius in the case of Limerick, Waterford and Galway. I do not, at present, contemplate any change in the law in respect of these areas.
