Vol. 242 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Schemes.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government when sanction was requested for the erection of 32 houses in Newcastle West, County Limerick; when it was granted; when tenders were sought; when one was accepted; when the contract was signed; and when work will commence.

I have received no proposal for the erection of 32 houses at Newcastle West. My sanction was, however, sought, on 30th September, 1968, to plans for the development there of 32 sites for private houses. Sanction was given to these plans on 23rd January, 1969. I do not know when tenders were invited. The deputy county manager's order accepting a tender was made on 6th June, 1969. A contract has not yet been signed. I am not in a position to say when work will be commenced as the tender proposal is still under consideration.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he intends to sanction immediately the Section B 1 scheme of houses at Lisduggan, Waterford city, submitted by the Waterford Corporation on 29th August, 1969.

The cost of this scheme would be excessive on the basis of the tender submitted. The proposal is under examination by my Department to ascertain if economies could be effected which would bring the cost down to a reasonable level.

On what date did the Minister indicate he would sanction the scheme?

The present proposal will not be sanctioned. The cost would be excessive.

Has the Minister replied to Waterford Corporation to that effect?

The proposal for these houses is under examination to see if economies can be effected so as to provide the houses at a reasonable cost.

The Minister stated he will not accept the present scheme and yet he——

——not on the basis of the tender submitted——

——has not yet informed Waterford Corporation——

——because the proposals are being examined to see if it will be possible to make economies in the scheme so as to provide the houses at a reasonable cost.
