Vol. 242 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bull Island (Dublin) Causeway.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of a silting up in the lagoon between Bull Island and the shore owing to the erection of the causeway; and whether he will now arrange with Dublin Corporation to have the causeway vented.

This is a matter for Dublin Corporation. I understand that such venting as was considered necessary was provided when the causeway was being constructed.

There is not an elected Dublin Corporation in existence at present.

That is not my fault. It is the fault of the Deputy's Party. A majority of the elected members of Dublin Corporation refused to do what they were elected to do.

If I were writing a crime story, the Minister would figure prominently in the rogues' gallery. Quite apart from Dublin Corporation, nothing is being done about the level of silting which is going up each week. The Minister for Industry and Commerce would tell the Minister that that is so. The position is not satisfactory.

I did not say it was satisfactory. I said that such venting as was considered necessary was provided when the causeway was constructed.

What was then considered as necessary has turned out not to be satisfactory.

I am aware that there is a certain amount of silting.

What does the Minister suggest?

I do not suggest anything. It is a matter for Dublin Corporation——

(Cavan):——the Minister.

In the absence of the Dublin Corporation we used to know, the Minister has a function in the matter.

There is not an absence of Dublin Corporation.

Yes, there is.

A majority of the elected members of Dublin Corporation refused to do what they were elected to do.

That has nothing to do with the silting.

Dublin Corporation is still functioning. It is a matter for Dublin Corporation.

Is the Minister washing his hands of the silt in the lagoon?

No. The Minister is not Dublin Corporation. This is a matter for Dublin Corporation.
