Vol. 242 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rock of Cashel.

49.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider having the Cathedral, St. Patrick's Rock, Cashel, repaired and reroofed.

The National Monuments Acts do not make provision for the restoration of National Monuments and the Commissioners of Public Works have no funds at their disposal for this purpose.

Who exactly is responsible for the restoration of Holy Cross Cathedral?

The Office of Public Works have authority in connection with Holy Cross Abbey as a result of a special Act passed by the Oireachtas in 1969. The cost of this scheme is borne by the church authorities and not out of public funds.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state if such a project was envisaged would they be prepared to give any financial aid towards it?

We have no statutory authority to do so.
