Vol. 242 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Season.

5.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will consider having the salmon fishing season open and close one month later than at present in order to facilitate tourist anglers.

The close seasons for salmon fishing are intended to keep a reasonable balance between conservation and exploitation. I would not consider changing the season for any river system except on the basis of being satisfied that a change is desirable in the interests of the fisheries in the river system. The salmon angling season already varies so much from river to river that sport may be had in any year from 1st January to 12th October in one area or another.
