Vol. 242 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Facilities.

34.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he is aware of the dissatisfaction among car rental firms with the accommodation and facilities at Shannon Airport; and, if so, if he has taken or proposes to take any steps to rectify the matter.

Due to the growth of traffic there are general problems of space for all services at Shannon Airport which will be solved when the new terminal building at present under construction becomes fully operational early in 1971. I understand, however, that meanwhile Aer Rianta are making more space available for the car rental firms.

Is the Minister aware that the alleged facilities under which these firms have been operating have been absolutely farcical? There are 14 companies operating over a counter 20 feet long; there are only two coin telephone boxes and passengers have to wait up to an hour to take delivery of their cars. The proposed interim arrangement is still unacceptable. Is the Minister aware that no discussions have taken place between the airport planners and the car rental firms? If he is aware of these things will he, please, take steps to rectify the position?

I am aware of the problems involved. I agree the arrangements have been faulty. A number of car rental people and other interests involved, together with Aer Rianta, are at the moment seeking to work out an agreement which will give the appropriate facilities and be mutually beneficial to everybody concerned. The existing arrangement expires this month and I hope then that the new arrangement will be satisfactory to everybody.

Will the Minister see to it that discussion takes place between the airport management and the car rental people?

The Deputy can take it these discussions will proceed by way of consultation and agreement between everybody.
