Vol. 242 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin School.

55.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the provision of a comprehensive school in Walkinstown, County Dublin.

It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to the post-primary school which will be provided in Walkinstown by the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee.

The sketch plans for the school have been approved generally by my Department, subject to some modifications. The revised sketch plans and other documents are to be furnished by the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee.

Could the Minister say if this school is likely to be ready for occupation by next September?

I am afraid I could not say that. As I said, I am awaiting the revised sketch plans and it will be proceeded with as rapidly as possible when we get these.

If the building is not at a sufficiently advanced stage for occupation then, would the Minister sanction temporary accommodation on the site in order to enable a vocational school to be opened next year? Is the Minister aware that on two previous occasions I asked Ministers for Education to sanction the right of the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee to acquire compulsorily a suitable site and this request was refused? This area has been established now for 20 years and still has no vocational school.

When I get the revised plans I will consider the matter.

Has the Minister an estimate of the number of boys who will be coming out of the adjoining school at the end of next year?

I have not got that figure.

I would ask the Minister to have a look at this as it is a very urgent matter.
