Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Adjustments in Franc and Mark.

32.

asked the Minister for Finance what effect the devaluation of the franc has had on the economy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance what effect the revaluation of the German mark has had on the Irish economy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 32 and 33 together.

The recent adjustments in the par values of the French franc and the Deutschemark have not had any perceptible effect on the economy. In view of the relative volume of trade and payments between Ireland and both countries, and the fact that any adverse effects of the franc devaluation should be set against the advantages accuring from the revaluation of the mark, it is unlikely that the final effect on the economy will be other than marginal.
