Vol. 242 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Juvenile Delinquents.

53.

asked the Minister for Justice how many gardaí are assigned to the juvenile liaison section; if there are any vacancies in this section at present; how long any individual vacancy has existed; how many of these gardaí have received special training in dealing with potential delinquent juveniles; and if the officer, or superintendent, in charge of this operation has had any special training in this respect.

The number of members of the Garda Síochána engaged in juvenile liaison work is 26, of whom 10 are assigned on a part-time basis. There are no vacancies in the section at present. The staffing of the section is reviewed annually to ensure the efficient working of the scheme. All members of the section have received special training in juvenile liaison duties. They are under the overall control of the chief crime prevention officer who combines this assignment with his crime prevention duties. He has had no special training in juvenile liaison work.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
