asked the Taoiseach the figure for the average weekly earnings of juvenile industrial workers, exclusive of overtime and bonuses, at the latest date for which this information is at present available.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 3, 4 and 5 together. Particulars of the average weekly earnings of industrial workers, exclusive of overtime and bonuses, are not available. Statistics of earnings of industrial workers are derived from returns which show total earnings only, including overtime payments, bonuses, etc. as well as basic pay. The average weekly earnings, including basic pay, overtime, bonuses, etc., of industrial workers engaged in industries producing transportable goods in October, 1967, which is the latest date for which the data classified by sex and age groups are at present available, were as follows:—

The corresponding average for all industrial workers in June, 1969, was 307s. 4d.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that it should be possible to state the basic pay? Should it not be possible to have this information in his Department? Does the Parliamentary Secretary not think that 1967 figures are a little out of date? Should the Department not be more up to date than that?

I have given the Deputy the figures for all industrial workers for June, 1969. The classified information, separating employees by age groups and by sex groups, is available only in the annual census. The last completed one was for 1967. The 1968 one will be available shortly.

Why could the Parliamentary Secretary not give the basic pay, apart from overtime and bonuses?

That information apparently is not sought. The more important thing is the total earnings: that is apparently what is sought.

I was anxious to get the information exclusive of that.

It is not available. It is not sought by those taking the census. It cannot be made available.
