asked the Taoiseach the total amount to date of the hire purchase debt; and if he will give details of the hire purchase debt for each of the past five years.

The total hire purchase and credit sale debt (including interest charges) within the State, on 30th June, 1969, amounted to £60.22 million, of which £57.63 million related to hire purchase agreements and £2.59 million to credit sales agreements. These are the latest figures available.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement setting out corresponding information for previous years.

* The method of compiling the statistics relating to hire purchase and credit sale agreements shown above was revised in 1966 in order to provide a more comprehensive and detailed coverage. Separate figures for hire purchase and credit sale activity are not available for years prior to 1966 but the overall figures for total debt covering both types of agreement, for 1964 and 1965, are roughly comparable with those for later years.
