Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Unskilled Labour.

73.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that unskilled workers are being brought in from England to do work that could be performed by Irish labour; and, if so, if there is any action open to him to prevent this happening.

I am not so aware, nor have any representations been made to me by trade unions in the matter.

There are no restrictions on the movement of workers between this country and Britain.

If unskilled workers are being brought in, as I have been told they are, the Minister cannot take any action.

The Aliens Order, 1946, does not apply to British workers. I was not clear whether the Deputy meant bringing back Irish workers from Britain or——

No, English workers. That is the complaint.

As things stand at present, there is free movement.

There is nothing that can be done.

But the Minister can do something if they are from other countries.
