Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Siting of Smelting Plant.

84.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if a decision has been taken to have a smelting plant sited in Cork; and, if so, what factors influenced such a decision.

I have stated on a number of occasions that the establishment of a smelter in this country is a matter for private enterprise. A smelter company registered here are, at present, examining the findings of a feasibility study on the question of setting up a lead-zinc smelter and, pending their decision, I am not in a position to indicate where the smelter may be located.

Has the Minister any idea of the amount of money which the smelter is likely to cost and of the job potential in the smelter?

I have no idea of the cost.
