Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Frozen Food Industry.

61.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has considered the desirability of setting up an industry to provide frozen food meals to meet the demand of the tourist industry.

I have no evidence to show that there is a demand from the tourist industry for frozen food meals which is not being adequately met. I have no doubt that the future expansion of existing public enterprise and the further expansion of private enterprise in this field will meet any required needs.

I might add that many of the visitors to our country expect fresh foods and this is one of our strong selling points in overseas markets.

Would the Minister ask Bord Fáilte if there is evidence that there is a demand for such food and, because of the scarcity of cooks in certain areas, would he consider setting up an industry to deal with this?

Erin Foods are in this.

Erin Foods do accelerated drying. They do not do pre-cook foods.

The Minister can rest assured that there is a big demand. Would the Minister look into the matter.

I will make inquiries.
