Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Bog Employment.

60.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he is aware that the men employed by Bord na Móna bog near Ballydesmond are dissatisfied regarding the lay-off of men, when in actual fact more men should be employed to prepare now for the 1970 season, particularly in view of the fact that Bord na Móna could not meet their demands from this bog in 1969; and if he will arrange for a full inquiry into the matter.

I have been informed by Bord na Móna that there has been nothing abnormal about the lay-off of seasonal workers this year at Barna bog. The work available determines the number of men who can be retained in employment over the winter. It is not possible to provide any extra work now which would contribute to increased production in the 1970 season as such work must be carried out by machines which must await suitable bog conditions next spring for their operation.

The board state that they are producing the maximum amount of turf possible at Barna.
