Vol. 243 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Criminal Law (Amendment) Act.

54.

asked the Minister for Justice if any proposals are before his Department to amend section 17 of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 1935.

The answer is "No".

Has the Minister received any representations from any body asking for an amendment of section 17 of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 1935?

No. I certainly have not.

Would he favourably receive such representations? Would he even consider amending certain aspects of the Act, particularly in relation to the dissemination of information on family planning?

There are many law reforms which, in my view, are much more urgent than amending this particular one.

Surely we must consider the minority in this State and surely this has an important bearing on our relations with our brethren in Northern Ireland?

Some of the minorities have expressed very mixed opinions on this issue. They do not all agree with the Labour Party's view on contraception.

The Minister has made a vicious attack on us over this. Is the Minister aware that from the Fianna Fáil Party itself there came a resolution to him asking for an amendment of this Act?

I am not so aware.

Furthermore, was it not debated in the Seanad over one week ago?

Now we know what you want.
