Vol. 243 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Auxiliary Postmen's Pension Scheme.

116.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange at an early date for the granting of a pension scheme for all auxiliary postmen, many of whom have over 30 years service and must retire with no pension in respect of their valuable services.

The grant of a pension scheme for auxiliary postmen is a matter for consideration by the Minister for Finance.

Does the Minister not consider that an auxiliary postman having to retire with no pension after 30 to 35 years service is worthy of a recommendation from the Minister to the Minister for Finance for some consideration? These men have very genuine service, are loyal officers of the Department, and it is most regrettable that there is not some provision made for them.

I agree with the sentiments of the Deputy in this regard. The position is that I find it difficult to comment because this is a matter properly to be settled at conciliation and arbitration. Negotiations are going on and it would be improper for me to comment to any great extent at this stage.

Is it true that an offer of a certain type has been made?

That is right.
