Vol. 243 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pensions.

34.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take steps to ensure that the pensions of retired gardaí increase pro rata to increases given to serving members of the force.

As I indicated in my last Budget speech I have already decided to accept in principle parity of pensions but because of cost considerations I have to move towards it over a number of years. As a start all State pensions, including those of retired members of the Garda Síochána, have been brought up to the level of the pensions of equivalent colleagues who retired with the benefit of the general pay increase of 1st February, 1964. The question of further adjustments is one for consideration with other matters appropriate to the Budget.
