Vol. 243 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Leaving Age.

92.

asked the Minister for Education when the school leaving age is to be raised to 15 as projected in the Second Programme for Economic Expansion.

I expect to be in a position to make an announcement in regard to this matter in the near future.

Would the Minister not agree that the current teacher-training and school-building programmes at this point of time, bearing in mind the length of time needed to expand, are completely inadequate to enable the imminent announcement of the Minister to be put into full effectiveness?

We are turning out more teachers now than we have been heretofore. As from this year we will be providing for 200 teachers above the normal annual requirements.

When would the Minister say they will be ready?

I did not say when.

Will it be in 1975?

Would it be in the next two years?

It has to happen in 1970.
