Vol. 243 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registration of Restaurants and Cafés.

42.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he proposes to introduce legislation to compel the registration of all restaurants and cafés in this country; and, if not, why.

The Tourist Traffic Acts provide for the registration and grading of hotels, guesthouses, holiday hostels, youth hostels, holiday camps, motor hotels and caravan and camping sites. The Acts do not provide for the registration and grading of restaurants and cafés.

Bord Fáilte are at present considering the position about catering facilities for tourists and I am awaiting their recommendations in the matter.

Restaurants and cafés are subject to the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1950, which are administered by the local health authorities and which provide for the registration and inspection of the premises.
