Vol. 244 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Housing.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government what proposals he has in hand to alleviate the present housing situation in Tullamore, County Offaly in view of the fact that a large number of married couples are unable to obtain houses there.

It is a matter for the local housing authority to formulate proposals to deal with housing needs in their areas.

There are no proposals for local authority housing schemes for Tullamore before my Department at present. However, in November last I approved the urban council's plans for the first 52 houses in an 84-house scheme at Puttaughan and I am now awaiting their building proposals. A further 31 acres have recently been acquired by the council for housing and a consulting architect is being appointed to prepare a land-use plan for this site. A scheme of 78 private houses is in course of construction in the town. In addition, Offaly County Council is building 24 houses at Mucklagh, which is adjacent to Tullamore.
