Vol. 244 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Grants.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state in expansion of Tables 15, 17 and 20 of Housing in the Seventies the conditions for revised grants from 1st October, 1969, having regard to Local Government Memorandum H.A.I; the manner in which it is proposed to apply grants and in particular, if the entire area of the dwelling within exterior walls qualifies or if the qualifying area of the dwelling is confirmed to the floor area of living rooms and bedrooms only.

The principal conditions governing the payment of the revised grants will be emboided in a Bill which I hope to introduce shortly.

Regarding the floor area of a dwelling for grant purposes, it is envisaged that this area will be based mainly on the sum of the areas of all floors measured inside the external walls of the dwelling.

Detailed particulars of the revised grant conditions will be announced as soon as possible.

There will not be a condition, although including all floor space as at present, that will state that the bedrooms and the living-rooms can be counted for the purpose of the grants? At present there is a certain area and then the areas of the bedrooms and the living-rooms are mentioned separately.

No, it will be the floor area.

There will not be a separate one then?

No. 54.Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Local Government whether grants are available from his Department for improvement to hotels, hostels, road houses, club houses, farm holiday houses, and if he will confirm that all new building or reconstruction grants issuing from his Department are limited to building for family domestic usage.

Grants are not available from my Department for improvements to hotels, hostels, road houses and club houses. Farm holiday houses which come within the definition of "house" in the Housing Act, 1966, may, in certain circumstances, qualify for reconstruction grants under that Act. Works carried out solely to provide holiday accommodation do not, however, qualify for grants.

Grants for the provision of new housing accommodation and for the reconstruction of existing houses are made available only within the framework laid down in Chapter 3 of the Housing Act, 1966.
