Vol. 244 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyheigue (Kerry) Development Plans.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that at a meeting of the Kerry County Council held some time ago a resolution was passed condemning the action of Bord Fáilte in not finalising the development plans for Ballyheigue, which were prepared by the architect and agreed to by the local development association as far back as 1957; if so, the reason for the delay; and when work on the scheme is to commence.

A copy of the resolution referred to by the Deputy was sent to my Department by Kerry County Council and a full reply was sent to the council.

The development proposals for Ballyheigue were agreed to by the local development association in February, 1967. Bord Fáilte have informed me that the proposals for Ballyheigue include provision for additional car parking facilities, but that the present access to the area is not suitable and is threatened by coast erosion. Efforts to purchase suitable land for better and safer access have not been successful because the price sought by the vendors was excessive and could not be justified by the county council or Bord Fáilte.

I understand that until suitable land at a realistic price becomes available, commencement of the work cannot be considered further.
