Vol. 245 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Cigarette Advertising.

6.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement concerning the strong criticisms at the Irish Medical Association's annual general meeting on 2nd April, 1970 that the Government had failed to introduce effective measures to phase out as a matter of urgency the advertising of cigarettes on hoardings, television, radio and the press.

7.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the resolution on cigarette smoking and advertising passed at the annual general meeting of the Irish Medical Association; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 6 and 7 together.

While I have seen press reports, I have not yet been supplied with the text of the resolution or resolutions passed at the meeting referred to. When the text is available to me, I shall consider it very carefully.

I presume that Deputies are aware that, for some time past, cigarette advertising on Telefís Éireann is being phased out and will be discontinued entirely by the end of the present financial year. The authority made their own decision in regard to this matter.

I am at present considering what further measures might reasonably be taken by me to counter the effect on young people of cigarette advertising and generally to discourage cigarette smoking. I hope in the near future to announce what form such measures will take.
