Vol. 245 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish-Greek Relations.

12.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the statement of one of his predecessors concerning the refusal of the Greek military government to admit representatives of international legal organisations to trials in Athens; and if he will make a statement in the light of this and the mass of similar evidence on the nature of diplomatic relations between Ireland and the Greek regime.

I have seen the statement to which the Deputy refers. The Government's concern at the situation in Greece and, in particular, at the failure to restore constitutional democracy and basic human rights is well known both from previous statements in the Dáil and from action taken in the committee of ministers of the Council of Europe. Ireland has never had diplomatic relations with Greece, as was pointed out to the Deputy in reply to his question in the Dáil on 11th February, 1969.
