Vol. 245 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Megalithic Cemetery.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the continued dangerous state of Carrowkeel megalithic cemetery in Sligo; and if he will arrange to have archaeologists from the Office of Public Works attend to this important site immediately.

The Commissioners of Public Works, aware of the need to protect this important group of passage graves, decided in 1967 to take it into guardianship. After successful negotiations with several landowners, 13 of the passage graves have been taken into State care and negotiations for the remainder are proceeding. A caretaker has been appointed who will keep the monuments under observation and report any interference or damage to them.
