Vol. 245 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Merger.

17.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has received a progress report following the meetings between representatives of the National University of Ireland and Dublin University; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter of the proposed merger between the Dublin colleges of the universities.

The question of formally furnishing such a progress report to me does not arise. I expect that a report of the proceedings and recommendations will in due course be supplied to the Higher Education Authority. It will then be a matter for the authority to furnish its views on the report to me.

18.

asked the Minister for Education if he has had any discussions with the British Government, the universities or the professional library bodies concerning the effect of the proposed merger of Trinity College and University College, Dublin, on the copyright deposit privilege as detailed in the British Copyright Acts.

It would be premature to consider the question of entering into any such discussions until proposals for the future organisation of university education in Dublin have been finalised.
