Vol. 245 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Amenities.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of dwellings in the country still without piped running water and without indoor toilet facilities; and what percentage each of these is in relation to total number of dwellings.

The latest available information is contained in the census of population which was taken on the 9th April, 1961. At that time, 43 per cent of the 676,402 existing dwellings had not got a piped water supply and 46 per cent did not have flush toilet facilities. Since the date of the 1961 census, 58,000 grants have been paid for the installation of piped water and sewerage services in existing private dwellings. In addition, 92,000 new dwellings have been built—practically all of which are fully serviced. While up-to-date figures of the number of serviced dwellings are not available, it is obvious, from these figures, that a substantially higher percentage of dwellings is now serviced than in 1961. It is intended to include particulars of sanitary facilities in the census to be taken next year.
