Vol. 246 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Promotion of Detective Gardaí.

43.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Justice (a) if interviews were held for the promotion of detective gardaí to detective sergeant in January last, (b) how many were called for interview, (c) how many were promoted following the interviews and (d) if any and, if so, how many, were promoted without interview.

The commissioner of the Garda Síochána is the statutory authority, subject to the Garda Síochána (Promotion) Regulations 1960 and 1962, for promotion to the rank of sergeant, including detective sergeant. He has informed me that (a) interviews for promotion to detective sergeant were held in January last; (b) 44 detective gardaí and nine uniform sergeants, who had previous service as detective gardaí, were called for interview; (c) four detective gardaí were selected and placed on a panel for promotion and two of these have since been promoted; (d) no promotions were made without interview.
