Vol. 246 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Duties.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is proposed to relieve gardaí of their present duties in relation to (a) school attendance supervision, (b) the collection of the agricultural census and (c) the collection of general census of population and to hand these over to civilians.

The Conroy Commission have recommended that steps should be taken to relieve the Garda Síochána from the obligation to carry out most, if not all, of the extraneous duties imposed on them, including those mentioned at (a) and (b) of the Deputy's question. I am favourably disposed towards the recommendation, which falls to be examined in the first instance by the research and planning unit of the Garda Síochána. As regards the census of population, it has been decided that because of the time factor, the Garda Síochána will, in relation to the next census, carry out the duties previously performed by them.

What about the following census?

We will probably have another look at it then.
