Vol. 248 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Traffic Consultations.

62.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will set in motion urgent consultations between his Department, the Department of Transport and Power, Dublin Corporation, Dublin County Council and Aer Lingus on the major road traffic problems arising from the arrival of jumbo jets at Dublin Airport.

The necessity to cater for any increased road traffic volumes created by passenger traffic at Dublin Airport is primarily a matter for the local authorities concerned, who are aware of their responsibilities in this regard. In so far as Road Fund moneys may be needed for works to cater for such traffic, the authorities concerned are aware of my Department's co-operative interest.

Is the Minister conscious of the serious concern being expressed now by Aer Lingus that with the arrival of two jumbo jets simultaneously in Dublin and the problem of transporting 600 or 800 people simultaneously in and out of Dublin through this extremely narrow artery, particularly at the city end, there is likely to be continuous traffic chaos and that this requires very urgent attention by not only the local authority but by the Government, otherwise North County Dublin arterial traffic will be completely chaotic?

We are very well aware of this. There are two local authorities involved—Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council. They are formulating proposals and my Department and also the Department of Transport and Power, who have an interest in this, are keeping in close touch with the local authorities in question about this matter. It is rather urgent.
