Vol. 248 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Diplomatic Contacts.

10.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if the British Ambassador was in contact with the Government recently; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The British Ambassador is frequently in touch with me on many subjects. It would be a breach of diplomatic propriety to disclose the nature of all these communications. However, I am prepared to say that many of them have been about the situation in the north.

Can the Minister state whether he discussed the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement with the British Ambassador or any breaches of that agreement?

I think the Deputy might be shocked if I were guilty of a breach of diplomatic propriety. There is frequent contact with the British Ambassador and other ambassadors but I do not think it is proper to say what is discussed.

In view of the adverse balance of trade with Britain, surely the matter was discussed with the ambassador?

I discuss our trade balance with representatives of every country frequently but I do not think I could tell the Deputy what exactly takes place at any of those conversations.

Would the Minister not agree that instead of dealing piecemeal with matters of such importance as the repercussions of his visit to the Falls Road and the Taoiseach's important television address a few days ago, it would be much more sensible and appropriate now to give time in this House for a comprehensive debate?

That is a separate question; the matter does not arise on Question No. 10.

It is very closely connected.

Will the Minister give a press conference to the elected Members of the House?

That is a separate question. I am calling Question No. 11.

What kind of a debate?

Why will the Minister not debate this?

These questions are out of order. They do not arise.

A debate on Northern Ireland.

That has no bearing on Question No. 10.

Is the Minister afraid of Deputy Blaney?

I have no fears of anyone.

Why not have a debate?

The Minister has the Taoiseach's seat almost taken over.

Does the Minister agree that a debate is necessary?

A certain amount of control is necessary at the present time in this House.

From that side of the House.

You are not able to exercise control over your own side.

(Cavan): You are controlling them by muzzling them.

The Minister looks troubled.
