Vol. 248 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Airline Manager's Statement.

8.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if his attention has been drawn to a recent statement by the general manager of Aer Lingus expressing grave concern about the implications of inflation for the airline; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Yes. I endorse the general tenor of the general manager's statement and I appeal to all who are concerned with our country's future in the airline industry and elsewhere to play a full and responsible part in helping to stem the inflation which threatens not only our airlines but our whole national progress and living standards.

Is it not a fact that Mr. Dargan's statement of the past week has caused grave concern among the employees of the airline? Is it not also true that this situation has given cause for concern not only in Aer Lingus but also within the tourist industry and has not the situation been brought about because of the failure of the Government to control inflation?

We are living in a democracy and no Government can control inflation without resorting to anti-democratic measures. We want to continue to function in a democracy where every element in that democracy will be responsible. The responsibility for whatever inflation exists rests well away from the Government's door.

(Interruptions.)

Is the Minister saying that the Government are incapable of controlling inflation?

That is a separate question entirely.

Unless trade unions, employers, management, and the people in general accept the fact that inflation is an evil and control themselves accordingly, there is very little a Government in a democracy can do short of encouraging and advising people to restrain themselves in the proper way.

Does that apply to the turnover tax?

Most democratic Governments accept responsibility for inflation.

The question relates to an airline.
