Vol. 248 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Dodder Pollution.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a report of serious contamination of the River Dodder which has resulted in a skin rash to bathers in that river; if inquiries have been made into the cause of the pollution of the river; and if steps have been taken to avoid a recurrence.

I have seen the Press report referred to regarding pollution in the Dodder River.

The matter is primarily one for the Dublin Corporation who, I understand, are investigating the position with a view to preventing a recurrence.

The chief medical officer, Dublin, is not aware of any cases of skin rash arising out of bathing in the river.

Is the Minister aware that there have been several reports that bird life and fish life have been deleteriously affected by the pollution in question? Is he aware that the local authority and the health authority, not-withstanding this evidence and the complaints of harm to human beings, have failed to take any action in the matter?

I am aware that there have been a few complaints. The report from the CEO in Dublin is that there have been no cases of skin rash arising from bathing in this river and that the matter is primarily one for the Dublin Corporation.

I know to the contrary, on medical advice.
