Vol. 248 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Clerical Work.

75.

asked the Minister for Justice if there have recently been carried out any organisation and methods studies into the clerical work carried out by members of the Garda Síochána; and if any changes have been introduced as a result of such studies.

For some years there was an organisation and methods branch within the Garda Síochána and one of the major tasks to which they directed their attention was the review of clerical work procedures. Their work led to a streamlining of several clerical jobs and consequently to a more efficient service.

The recently established research and planning unit in the Garda Síochána is now responsible for work of this kind and will continue to review clerical procedures in Garda stations, as part of its task of improving the efficiency of the force.

Is the Minister aware that the issue of a firearms certificate involves the garda in filling in information on no fewer than six pieces of paper? There is a much more streamlined system in Northern Ireland.

Is the Deputy asking a question?

Would the Minister not agree that something should be done to speed up this clerical work?

Something is being done. I gave the Deputy the information in my reply.

When can we expect results?
