Vol. 248 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pay and Conditions.

76.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will itemise the recommendations of the Conroy Commission on Garda pay and conditions which are (a) accepted and implemented, (b) accepted but not yet implemented, (c) rejected, (d) still under consideration and (e) dealt with in any other way.

I should perhaps make it clear at the outset that the implementation of many of the recommendations of the Conroy Report call for detailed discussion with representatives of the force and that it is not just a matter of their being considered by me or by the Government.

Of the 52 recommendations made in the report, over half—27 to be exact— have already been implemented. Practically all the others are under examination by the consultative council which was established as recommended by the report and, while the examination in some cases has reached an advanced stage, there is still much to be done in relation to others and many complex issues still remain to be gone into. As the discussions at the council are private and as they are, moreover, proceeding both effectively and harmoniously, I do not consider that public reference to individual recommendations would be justified or helpful at this stage.

Would the Minister not agree that the House is entitled to know what is happening to the recommendations made by a body paid for out of public funds?

There are 52 recommendations. I will read them out to the Deputy. It will take me about 20 minutes. Each has been dealt with separately.

Circulate them.

We have had enough speeches from the Minister today.

Will the Minister circulate these?

Put them in the Official Report.

If I put them in the Official Report I will be abused. I will give the appropriate part of the information in the Official Report.
