asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the urgent necessity for increased accommodation for mentally retarded children throughout Sligo, Leitrim and the surrounding counties, he has considered proceeding with an extension to Cregg Hospital at Sligo.

Proposals by the authorities of Cregg House, Sligo, for the acceptance of tenders for the building of a 60-bed extension at Cregg House, Sligo, were recently approved by my Department. I understand that work on this scheme will commence within the next few weeks.

In addition to this 60-bed extension, approval in principle has been given to the provision of another 100 beds, for female mentally handicapped adults, at Cregg House. Planning for this additional 100 beds is in the preliminary stages.
