Vol. 249 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Registration of Marriages.

3.

asked the Minister for Health why marriages are not registered on the same lines as births and deaths.

Broadly speaking, births, deaths and marriages are registered on the same lines in so far as the events are recorded in civil registers from which certificates of the recorded data can be obtained. The variations in procedure at registration arise solely from the different nature of the events concerned.

Is the Minister stating that anyone can get a copy of a marriage certificate from a local health authority office?

The Deputy will have to put another question to me about that.

That is the purpose of my question. I asked the Minister if marriages are registered on the same lines as births and deaths. A certificate in either case can be obtained from the local health authority and I am wondering if a certificate of marriage can be obtained in the same way.

I am sure it can, by the participants. We are going to have a new births, marriages and deaths registration system to clear up a number of existing anomalies.
